VW-Krise verhindert Shawn Fains Auftritt bei der Betriebsversammlung - ikonisches Foto aus Halle 11 bleibt

Wolfsburg/Detroit - Es ist ein ikonisches Foto: Shawn Fain, der Präsident der US-Autogewerkschaft UAW, reckt seine geballte rechte Faust in die Höhe - das in den sozialen Bewegungen international bekannte Zeichen für Solidarität, Stärke und Widerstand. Shawns Blick in diesem Moment: entschlossen, überzeugt, willensstark.

In dieser Szene auch gut zu sehen: Shawn Fain trägt das seit dem Parteitag der US-Demokraten bekannte rote T-Shirt mit der Aufschrift “TRUMP IS A SCAB - VOTE HARRIS”. Wörtlich übersetzt: "[Donald] Trump ist ein Streikbrecher - wählt [Kamala] Harris!" Frei übersetzt bedeutet es: “Trump ist ein Feind der Gewerkschaften - entscheidet Euch daher für Harris!”

Shawn Fain sticht bei dieser Pose aus der Masse heraus. Er hat sich in dem bestuhlten Bereich der Halle 11 vor der Bühne während der historischen Betriebsversammlung im Stammwerk als Einziger erhoben. Seine Kopfhörer für die Simultanübersetzung hat er kurz vom Kopf heruntergenommen und um seinen Hals gelegt. Hinter ihm, in der Unschärfe des Raumes, sind einige der Plakate zu sehen, mit denen die Belegschaft an jenem 04. September 2024 ihrem Unmut Luft machte und gegen das Vorgehen des Vorstandes protestierte.

Aufgenommen hat das Fain-Foto Roland Niepaul, Fotograf und Medienexperte bei Volkswagen. Er dokumentiert im Auftrag des Wolfsburger Betriebsrates regelmäßig den Verlauf der Betriebsversammlungen in Halle 11 des Stammwerkes. Die allermeisten Fotos, die der Betriebsrat nach Versammlungsende als sogenannte Handouts den Medien zur Verfügung stellt, stammen von Roland. Auch hier auf IGM bei VW ist Rolands Arbeit also regelmäßig zu sehen. 

Shawn Fain tauchte hier übrigens bereits im Frühling mehrfach auf, als seine UAW im VW-Werk in Chattanooga einen historischen Sieg feierte. Damals bedankte er sich in einem Video für die wichtige Unterstützung des VW-Betriebsrates. Es folgte die Einladung nach Wolfsburg. Eigentlich hätte Shawn Fain natürlich sprechen sollen in Halle 11. Über Chattanooga, über die Arbeit der UAW und über das, was die VW-Belegschaft in den USA mit den Kolleginnen und Kollegen in Deutschland verbindet. Angesichts der historischen Tabubrüche des Vorstandes Anfang September musste es dann anders kommen. Shawn Fain war nur Gast in Halle 11, wurde natürlich entsprechend begrüßt. Aber sprach nicht.

Geblieben ist das Foto - ein Foto wie eine Statue. Mehr als 25.000 Teilnehmende in und um Halle 11 haben ihn gesehen.

Also easy to see in this scene: Shawn Fain is wearing the red T-shirt with the slogan ‘TRUMP IS A SCAB - VOTE HARRIS’ that has been familiar since the US Democratic Party National Convention. Loosely translated, it means: ‘[Donald] Trump is an enemy of the unions - vote for [Kamala] Harris!’

Shawn Fain stands out from the crowd with this pose. During these seconds he was the only person to stand up in the seated area of Hall 11 in front of the stage in this historic works meeting at VW's main plant. He has briefly taken his headphones for the simultaneous translation off his head and placed them around his neck. Behind him, in the blur of the room, you can see some of the banners the workforce used to vent their anger and protest against the actions of the Management Board on this 4th of September 2024.

The Fain photo was taken by Roland Niepaul, photographer and media expert at Volkswagen. He regularly documents the proceedings of the works meetings in Hall 11 of the main plant on behalf of the Wolfsburg Works Council. Most of the photos that the Works Council makes available to the media as handouts at the end of the meeting are taken by Roland. So Roland's work can also be seen regularly here on IGM at VW.

Shawn Fain btw already appeared here several times in spring when his UAW celebrated a historic victory at the VW plant in Chattanooga. At that time, he thanked the VW works council in a video for their important support. This was followed by an invitation to Wolfsburg. Of course, Shawn Fain should have spoken in Hall 11 - about Chattanooga, about the work of the UAW and about what connects the VW workforce in the USA with their colleagues in Germany. In view of the historic taboo-breaking by the German Board of Management at the beginning of September, things had to turn out differently. Shawn Fain was only a guest in Hall 11 and was of course greeted accordingly. But he did not speak.

What remained was the photo - a photo like a statue. More than 25,000 participants in and around Hall 11 have seen him that way.
